What the figures measure
The CSO uses new electricity connections, with checks to exclude reconnections and other connections that are not new homes. A “single house” is a single domestic connection, as distinct from a house in a scheme or an apartment. This is a measure of completed homes, not planning permissions, building starts or insurance customers.
Single houses include many self-builds, but the table does not identify whether an owner managed the work, hired a main contractor or bought a completed home. It cannot give an exact self-build total.
We take the single-house series from CSO table NDQ06 and add the local-authority counts into 26 counties: Cork and Galway combine city and county; Dublin combines its four councils. Limerick and Waterford already have combined councils. County totals must add up to the published Ireland total for every quarter.
The figures are not seasonally adjusted and the CSO may revise earlier quarters. Historical Cork figures use the post-May-2019 boundaries throughout. The download and this page use the CSO data released on 30 July 2026. The download covers Q1 2011 to Q2 2026; the charts show recent quarters and the table shows Q2 2026.
We check for new CSO figures in February, May, August and November. Before citing these figures, compare the quarter and source date above with the latest CSO release.
Read the CSO’s background notes for classifications and limitations, its reuse policy and our editorial policy for corrections.
